DOWNLOAD: Complete Strangers - Complete Strangers

I originally posted this album in March 2010, but because I've been listening to it a lot lately, I am posting it again. Every time I listen to Complete Strangers, I am reminded of how amazing they were. If you like rock music along the lines of Talking Heads, Rolling Stones, T. Rex, Elvis Costello or The Stooges, download this. There is nothing I will ever post to this blog that I will recommend more highly.

LISTEN: Pike Holt - Call Me Up

It's been a little less than a decade since the release of the Complete Strangers' brilliant self-titled album, which still stands as one of my favorite albums ever from a West Virginia-related band. Its blending of styles that range from The Stooges to the Talking Heads, Velvet Underground to Prince, was unique, ahead of its time, but simply fun and exciting.

The mastermind of that band was Pike Holt, who is still at it making music in Columbus, Ohio. As part of his current solo venture, he has released a new track called "Call Me Up." It rings of Complete Strangers, but with a matured approach to rock and roll. I can't wait to hear what comes soon from Pike.

READ: Soft Rock Renegade turns one year old

One year ago today, I made the first post on this blog. Running a blog that archives music from West Virginia was something I always wanted to do, but I'm a little surprised I have kept it up for a year. It wouldn't have happened without the support and encouragement of those who read SRR, submit material and send me comments. It makes me realize I'm spending time on something people enjoy. Appropriately on the day after Thanksgiving, I say, Thanks.

To celebrate the one year anniversary the best I can from my bed at home, I am reposting the Top 5 most downloaded albums posted to the blog. (And apologies for the cheesy image at the top. Thank Google.) Please take some time and go back through the last year of posts and check out some of the material that is on here. There are so many good bands, albums available for download, videos and more. I hope to be doing this for another year.

I will start with a bold statement: the Complete Strangers were the most original, most exciting and best band I have ever seen come from the West Virginia area. This record is one of the reasons why I created this blog in the first place. It's that good.

In 2001 the garage rock revival was in full force with bands like The Strokes and White Stripes. This was a blessing and a curse for the Strangers. A blessing in that it gave the band some deserved attention, which helped them book more shows and develop a regional fan base. But it was a curse in that, despite the band's 3-year-deep career, they were seen as jumping on the bandwagon, which was simply not the case.

Obsessed with the likes of Iggy Pop, Marc Bolan and Prince, it was the then 19-year-old Pike Holt who fronted the Complete Strangers and wrote all their songs. On stage, Holt channeled his inspirations resulting in a loud, emotional and sweaty (and some times bloody) frenzy of R&B-infused punk rock 'n' roll gospel. The Strangers' live shows were never half-hearted.

On record, 2002's self-titled album takes all that energy, rebellion and passion and blends it with more inspiration from the likes The Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground and Elvis Costello. The album opens with the anthemic "River of Lethe," which hints at James Brown singing the chorus of The Clash covering "Gloria." The funky and lyrically clever track "I Think I'm Getting Used to You" rings of the Talking Heads, while the 9-minute-long "Ain't It Strange" takes the listener from "Satisfaction" into Patti Smith's "Horses" in a matter of moments.

This band was spectacular. This record still is spectacular. I have nothing more to say.
